Dollar Stroll, Thursday June 13 Postponed to July Sept. 12

The Dollar Strolls along Baltimore Avenue have been cut back this year to Thursday, June 13, and September 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. We’ll be open late both nights, offering some deeply discounted dollar items out front, and lots of new and discounted books inside! Because of thunderstorms, the June Dollar Stroll has been postponed; the new date has not yet been announced.

Labor History Events:

We will be tabling with labor history books and posters (and other neat stuff) Saturday, May 10, in New Brunswick, NJ. http://laborfightback.org/conference/

June 7th and 8th we’ll be tabling at the annual meeting of the Labor & Working Class History Association in New York City. (We also tabled Philadelphia’s annual May Day celebration on May 1.)

In the City of Bikes: The Story of the Amsterdam Cyclist 

Pete Jordan (aka Dishwasher Pete) will discuss his new book, a history/memoir of cycling in a city world famous for its bicycle culture. The people of Amsterdam have embraced the bicycle since the 1890s, not only as a means of transport but as a part of their very humanity. In Amsterdam, the bike is King of the Road. Bikes are central to everyday life, to festivals, and even to the anti-Nazi resistance during World War II.

We’re hosting his only appearance in the region Wednesday, May 8, 7 p.m. at Plays & Players’ Skinner Theater (1714 Delancey Place, just south of Spruce Street). Co-sponsored by Neighborhood Bike Works.

Giant Spring Book Sale! Postponed

Pushed back from April – New Date posted when we have it. We’re finalizing details, but this is always a huge event. Piles of books, at deep discount, from our inexhaustible basement — and some offsite locations as well. Scholarly books, literary fiction, children’s books galore! We might start before noon — we’ll run through mid-afternoon. We’ll update this as we firm plans up.

Kol Tzedek’s Annual Hanukkah Party! Sunday, December 9, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

We will be tabling as part of the holiday bazaar/vegetarian potluck fundraiser at the Calvary Center for Community & Culture (48th & Baltimore).

Cannabis Chassidis: The Ancient and Emerging Torah of Drugs. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 6 p.m.

Joseph Lieb will discuss his new memoir (details and excerpts at www.cannabischassidis.blogspot.com) and sign copies in the bookstore’s back room. Alan Moore described the book as “An enthusiastic and interesting excursion into the psychedelic fringes of hasidic culture.”

PIC Family Book Fest  Saturday, Nov. 10, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30

We’re tabling at this annual book fair at the Rotunda (4014 Walnut St.) and benefiting the Parent Infant Center. There will be stories and activities for kids under age 7, a book swap table, and more. Local children’s authors Monica Carnesi, author of “Little Dog Lost,” and Sibylla Benatova, illustrator of “The Magic Raincoat,” will be there too…

All Hallows Read: A Spooky Book Swap & Hunt  Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. – Noon

Bring a book to Woodlands Cemetery October 20th, and swap it for a new-to-you book! Scary books, fall books, books about monsters, all types of seasonal reads are welcome. Books will be hidden throughout the cemetery in age-appropriate sections. (If you have books that you can donate before the event for us to hide, you can drop them off at locations including Bindlestiff Books, the Walnut West Library, the Lucien Blackwell Regional Library, Locust Moon, or House of Our Own.) We’ll be tabling with a selection of remaindered books discounted to $1 only for the Dollar Stroll, as well as two titles from World Book Day we’ll be distributing free while supplies last! In the back room inside the store, we’ll have a selection of new books at deep discount.

Thou Shalt Not Steal  Thursday, July 19, 8 p.m.

Al Hunter Jr. reads from and discusses the life of Bill “Ready” Cash, the legendary Philadelphia Stars Negro Leagues catcher (and West Philly resident) whose life he chronicles from interviews and stories collected before he died. Thou Shalt Not Steal: The Baseball Life and Times of a Rifle-Armed Negro League Catcher. We keep replenishing our supply of the book, so it’s not to late to catch up on this lively story of Cash’s life playing baseball and battling discrimination.
